The Texas Homestead Tax Exemption lowers the taxable value of your home and will save you money. You may have received letters in the mail from companies encouraging you to pay a fee to file your exemption. Do not fall for these scams!!! Filing is free and only takes a few moments. I am even happy to fill out some of the tricky form information for you and send you everything you need to file.
To qualify for the Texas Homestead Exemption, you must meet the following criteria:
- The home for which you wish to file must be your primary residence (i.e. you do not wish to maintain the homestead exemption on another property).
- You must have owned the property on January 1st. (If you purchased your home after January 1st, you cannot file until the following year.)
If you are a Disabled Veteran, over the age of 65, the surviving spouse of someone who was 65 years or older, or a person receiving disability insurance payments, you may also qualify for additional tax savings. I am happy to answer general questions.
Your Home’s Taxable Value
